Updated IWA Forest Industry Pension Plan Information

The benefits in the “Package” result from collective bargaining between the forest industry companies and the USW. Most of the benefit cost is borne by the employers rather than the employees. Some of the benefit plans are jointly trusteed and all are administered by  third parties. But , the perception of some employers is that the administrators are advocates for the union and do not understand an employer’s  perspective on benefits  and their cost control.

In 2009,the two Coastal Forest Industry Health and Welfare Plans were merged into one new Plan to achieve economies of scale and lower overall costs for employers. One aspect of the merger arrangement was that FIR Labour Relations Ltd. would provide an employers advisory service for participating employers where they could get an employer’s perspective on benefits even if they were not members of an employers bargaining association.

This website is designed to provide a participating employer with basic information regarding the plans he is paying for as well as indicating where he can get further help if it is needed.
